Learning from others
Rinko Kawauchi
Rinko kawauchi is my biggest inspiration and reason for making this project. To me, her photography embodies the emotions that belong to fleeting moments and nostalgia. Her ability to capture images that feel like a dream or a faint memory is truly captivating and I look forward to trying to recreate this feeling in my own images.
To be able to learn these techniques I looked into what type of techniques and equipment Kawauchi uses.
Kawauchi is known for her unique view of the world around her and this is the main reason her photography feels so personal. She has used different gear over the years, including film camera's and fujifilm digital camera's. She uses Prime, Macro and Wide Angle lenses depending on what scenario she is trying to capture. To create a shallow depth of field she uses a low f -stop, which blurs out the background.
She uses post-editing to emphasise the emotions in the images, focusing on the natural light and soft colours. She also adds texture and grain to create a nostalgic, film like aesthetic.
I plan on trying to create my own dream-like images tomorrow using a 20 mm pancake lens with the lowest f-stop being 1.7. On my walk I will see what grabs my attention and try to capture nature in a similar way, adding my own perspective. Afterwards I'm going to use the same editing techniques and post what I was able to create along with the process.
